Current and future trends in logistics

General

All industries evolve but perhaps none more so than the logistics and supply chain industry. The huge rise in e-commerce has significantly impacted the daily operations of almost all logistic companies, changing it almost unrecognisably from just a decade ago. Here are some of the current trends that have come to the fore during 2019:

  1. Increased workhouse safety

Following a rise in warehouse fatalities in 2017, health and safety has been under increasing scrutiny. Managers have increasing responsibilities to ensure staff safety, carry out detailed risk assessments and comply with certain legal obligations. Warehouse equipment must be regularly maintained and deemed fit for use before defects become possible accidents. It is important that only the highest quality machinery is used, such as Telescopic Conveyors from a site like https://fmhconveyors.com/products/telescopic-conveyors/

  1. Drones

It hasn’t arrived yet but this year has seen more talk of the role drones are likely to play in distribution. There are still health and safety issues to overcome but it’s now just a matter of time before drones working in facilities become a daily reality. Many interior drones are currently being designed for warehouse and distribution centre use, with these unmanned aerial vehicles being able to scan barcodes for inventory purposes.

  1. Next or Same Day Delivery

The last few years has seen this delivery option become increasingly available. Combined with the ease of online shopping, this is a delivery option that customers have now come to see as the norm. Many companies are adopting the practice of same day delivery and this is only set to grow as we enter 2020.

  1. Cloud based data services

Almost every warehouse is now equipped with the latest technology making processes faster, more flexible and more adaptable. One of these faster solutions is the use of cloud-based data which enables a large range of data to be accessed instantly wherever staff are located. The data can be used to help manage orders, shipments and inventory. The reliance on technology is set to increase in the near future with the benefits considered to outweigh the initial outlay and updates and improvements becoming a regular occurrence.

  1. Robotics

Robots are also entering the world of logistics, making procedures more accurate and efficient. Companies are beginning to apply them in tasks such as loading and unloading and picking tasks. Current robotics is set to continually evolve and expand over time and it is expected that robotics will be at the forefront of the logistics industry in the years to come.

  1. Demand for workers

With all the talk of drones and robotics, it might seem as if humans are being pushed out of the equation. Warehouse staff will still be very much in demand as there will be increased opportunities to work with and on the robots and to engage in software management and development. The role of technology in this industry is not about replacing workers but assisting them in being more efficient and enhancing their capabilities. Young people are being sought as there is a glut in the supply of warehouse workers and today’s youth are the ones with the technological know-how to be able to work with cutting edge robotics and software.
